När vi vaknade efter en läng och stärkande sömn hade öppningarna omkring oss tillfrusit och vi fingo ett förfärligt arbete med att komma 50 m till nästa flak. Efter att ha anländt dit och rekognoserat Sid. 87 funno vi att vi möjligen kunde komma fram i annan riktning och vände så tillbaka därvid mötande en hvalross, hvars ljud och öfriga uppträdande och habitus visade oss att vi hade att göra med "sjöormen". Det är alltså hvalrossar vi hört och sett ända uppe vid gondol plats en. Efter en kort rodd kommo vi in i en allt tjockare snösörja hvilken till sist blef nära metertjock och i hvilken båten absolut ej kunde framdrifvas. Situationen blef kritisk, men då lyckades en af oss hoppa i "land" och draga båten intill ett isflak där vi måste stanna och tälta.

After arriving there and reconnoitering, we found that we could possibly get there in another direction and turned back, encountering a walrus, whose sounds and other behavior and habits showed us that we were dealing with the "sea serpent". It is therefore walruses that we heard and saw all the way up to gondola place one. After a short rowing we entered an increasingly thick snowdrift which eventually became nearly a meter thick and in which the boat could not be propelled at all. The situation became critical, but then one of us managed to jump "ashore" and pull the boat to an ice floe where we had to stop and camp.
